If the unit had a single exhaust stack ahead of the dynamic brake fan, it
would probably be a GP39/39-2 with turbocharged engine. As far as I know, all
GP38s and 38-2s had two exhaust stacks, one either side of the dynamic brake
fan. Since the GP39 series shared the same car body as the GP38, it had a
turbocharged V12-645E3 engine while the 38 has a normally aspirated V16-645E
engine without the turbo. The two locomotives look so much alike that not even
I c ould tell the difference until they got close so I could here them. The 39
is a howler while the 38 sounds much like the old 567C engine.
