PC: Anniversary Thoughts

On the 30th anniversary of Penn Central's birth an additional fact should
be noted. The eventual destruction of PC pointed out that a 1968 (or for
that matter 1998) railroad cannot survive when subjected to 1898
regulation. Post-Staggers Conrail showed everyone what Penn Central could
have been. Too bad it took the nation's worst bankruptcy to get the
attention on Congress and the I.C.C. It was Penn Central's death that
saved U.S. freight railroads.
