PC: RE: Penn Central Digest V5 #62

 Guys;
The name works for the group. We do not to worry about changing it. The interesting part is the many changes the company made for legal reasons. Look at some of the stock certificates. I have a five different kinds with different names and some stamped "NAME NOW CHANGED TO ...."
It would be a interesting tidbit for the site a flow chart of the name changes.

Hey Guys.....

I had a very interesting conversation today. I was asked
today (by an ex railroad employee): "Why do you guys (the PCRRHS) call
yourselfs the Penn Central RAILROAD Historical Society. It was the Penn
Central Transportaion Company...not railroad. All of the paper work said
Transportation Company" At first I thought that he was being a
smart-ass. But when I thought about it, it was Penn Central
Transportation Company.
Thought I'm a founding member, I wasn't here to name the
Society. Penn Central Railroad sounds fine to me, but was it ever
discussed to have the name Penn Central Transportation Company
Historical Society or PCTCHS. That's a mouthful!
Just curious....

This should even make the die hard river counters cringe. It's a Railroad Historical Society formed because of interest in Penn Central. That's like saying there shouldn't be a National Railway Historical Society because there never was a National Railway.

Actually, it was originally officially the Pennsylvania New York Central
Transportation Company. Later it was Penn Central Transportation Company
and at some point I believe it was Penn Central Company. I also believe it
was called Penn Central Railroad sometime between June of 1970 and Conrail.
The name was changed several times as I remember for legal reasons.

Hi guys,
It was Pennsylvania New York Central Transportation Company from Feb. 1,
1968 to May 1, 1968, when the name was changed to Penn Central Company. Then
it was Penn Central Transportation Company after the reorganization that
made the Railroad assets a subsidiary of the PC parent (holding) company.
Not sure about the dates on the change from PC Company to PCTC, but I know
it came sometime after the bankruptcy.

Having said all that, I think the name PCRRHS just came about as a
commonsense name. As you said PCTCHS would be too cumbersome...

I remember there were numerous opinions on the subject tossed around on this list about 7 or 8 years ago. PCT&HS (Technical and Historical) was one of them, but I thnk the final name was chosen to best identify the group as being railroad related.

Dave,
The answer is very easy as to why we not call the Penn Central
Transportation Historical Society. The society is not in the transportation
business like the Penn Central was but, we are interested in the Penn
Central railroad.
