Re: PC: A "Penn Central System" gondola?

The car that I have a picture of is P & LE 65 ft. gondola #17522. It's
from a group of 100 (17500 - 17599) that was built 2/68 for the P & LE. It
has the name "Penn Central System" underneath the PC logo. BUT, it is a P
& LE car and not a PC car.

The car the fellow saw was an early 1968 painted P & LE gondola. The first
group of new (or rebuilt, I forget which) gondolas the P & LE got were
lettered Penn Central System underneath the logo. The "System" was
actually underneath the name "Penn Central". I don't remember the car
series (being here at work) but I think I have a picture of one of them at
home. The car was definitely not a Penn Central car.

Okay, PC photo nuts, here's a new mystery to solve. I got this e-mail by
a visitor to my Penn Central Railroad Online web site. I've never heard
of this lettering variation, although as we all know, you can "never say
never" when it comes to Penn Central. :)

Anyone ever seen such a car? I'd like to reply to this fellow with a
more definitive answer than "duh, I dunno." Plus, now this has *me*
curious.

Thanks,

I distinctly remember seeing a PC gondola lettered "Penn Central System"
with the word "System" in the same PC slanted letter style as the rest
of the name. I have not seen this recorded in any of the PC books. Do
you know of anyone who knows about this version and how many cars were
so lettered? I saw the car on a westbound freight train on the former
Panhandle route just west of Newark, Ohio in April-May of 1977.
