Re: PC: Weird blue PC gons

Here's some information concerning the blue gondolas on page 123 of the PC
Color Guide. They are not faded green but actually blue. They are part of the
wreck train assigned to Collinwood yard that the Penn Central painted in
bicentennial colors in 1975. In late October / early November 1975 the
Collinwood shops repainted the two MOW passenger cars assigned to the wreck
train in red, white and blue bicentennial colors. Between 11/15/75 and 11/29/75
a 40 ft. boxcar, idler car and 3 gondolas were also painted. The consist
remained together as a set until at least the formation of Conrail.

>From east to west the make-up of the set was as follows:

PC crane (Number unknown): remained painted in black with a large PC logo on the
side and the name Penn Central on the boom part of the crane.
PC idler car #31579: painted all blue.
PC MOW car #28218 (ex-baggage): painted white with a red stripe across the upper
third of the car and the lower forth of the car in blue, roof in white, the
baggage doors and car ends in blue; the name 'Penn Central' was inside the red
stripe.
PC MOW car #27399 (ex-diner?): painted white with a red stripe across the upper
third of the car and the lower forth of the car in blue, roof in white and the
car ends in blue; the name 'Penn Central' was inside the red stripe.
PC MOW 40ft. boxcar #34860: painted white with a red stripe across the upper
third of the car and the lower forth of the car in blue, roof in white, the car
door and ends in blue; the name 'Penn Central' was inside the red stripe.
PC MOW gondola #34861: 41 ft. 12 panel gondola painted all blue
PC MOW gondola #34862: 41 ft. 9 panel gondola painted all blue
PC MOW gondola #34863: 41 ft. 9 panel gondola painted all blue

All 3 gondolas had the PC logo in the 2nd panel from the left. The reason
for the logo being in a black background is because the logo was a decal. Since
this set was painted by the Collinwood locomotive shops, they used the decals
that were normally used for the nose and ends of locos when painted.

Although I don't know for sure, I would guess that the heritage of all of
the cars in this set was New York Central since it was the Collinwood wreck
train.

Hi

If you turn to page 123 of the PC Colour guide, at the top of the page
you'll see a jet powered snow remover thingy. All very nice 'n' that, but
looking behind for a second, you'll see a couple of light blue gons with big
lettering. Big deal you may think, this is, after all, three months after
the formation of Conrail, but they have Penn Central worm logos! I'm
guessing they are in MoW use, as one is carrying track panels.

Anyone know what's the story regarding these gons?

Regards,

Gareth
