It has to do with the air intakes along the top side of the F unit. Early
ones had a mesh grillwork that looked like chicken wire, as opposed to the
later Fs. Late Fs like the F7, FP7, and F9 were delivered with air filter
packs designed by the Farr Company which replaced the mesh with grilles
having vertical slits. Some F3s were refitted with Farr grilles, and then
the term chicken-wire F came to determine early, unrefitted Fs as opposed to
the late with stock Farrs or the refits.
