I haven't seen the GP38-2, but I've seen the U33Cs, and I'd definitely
agree with you that the lettering isn't quite right.  To me the letters
look a bit too thick.  I'm not aware of two different lettering styles
being used, but I believe PC did use at least two different styles of cab
numbers.
