To me, it appears that NYC and PRR did the same thing to these pilots when 
they removed the clamshell doors.  It appears they cut off the front most 
area of the pilot on a vertical plane crosswise to the locomotive centrline. 
  Then it appears that they welded on some sheeting across this opening and 
left a squarish area for the coupler and trainline to protrude through.  I 
am doing a NYC F7A, an earlier one that had the passenger pilot, and am 
using the Intermountain shell.  I altered the passenger pilot to appear as 
best as I coild to match the Central's modifications.  I used to think it 
was just a matter of removing the coupler cover doors, but that was not the 
case.  There is a good picture of a close up F7A head - on in the Edson - 
Vail - Smith New York Central Diesels book in the color section towards the 
rear that shows this very well.  I am not sure if the PRR did the identical 
process or not.
