One of the ways I have solved this problem is using a flexible paint.
Model Flex paint is flexible enough that peeling should not be a problem, at
least with normal handling. My personal favorite paint color for this chore
is TTX Yellow. It is a rather pale (faded) yellow... perfect for weathered
handrails...
