PC: 1100 & Washboards

Budd Company held the patent on shot welding aluminium. 
Passenger cars built by other builders with smooth or corrugated 
aluminium sides where attached to a steel frame. The chemical 
reaction between the two metals caused the steel to rust out very 
badly over the years. Also these cars where built with a layer of 
insulation between the outer aluminium and the steel interior that 
just asorbed moisture also helping to speed up the rusting out 
process. By the 1970's many passenger cars looked very good on 
the outside, but under that painted skin they were rusted away. 
This may have been a factor as to why the 1100 class ex-NYC 
cars and the NH washboard cars where not converted to diesel 
hauled coaches.
