CNW did not use dynamic brakes and their GP7, GP9, GP30, SD40, and SD45
locomotives do not have them, among others. The SD45 is the most
noticeable because they look wierd as the only SD45's without - the flare
ends at the front of the radiators. (They did later buy used SD45's from
CR and BN which did not lose the dynamics). IC removed dynamics from a
fleet of used BN SD40-2's recently eliminating the need to maintain them,
it does happen. A railroad in flatland territory or who is just plain
cheap has no need for them. I've seen CNW SD40-2's without DB myself here
in ex-PC territory. Speaking of which, this debate is just a few miles
off-topic so, before Jer yells at us.. :o) new topic?
Which ex-PC SD45 got a Cat deisel in an aborted CNW rebuild program? I
know they bought a number of ex-CR SD45's, which were primarily PC's I
think - at the same time they picked up some BN units as well. One
prototype or two were done and then the program was cancelled and the
remaining units run into the ground and sold off/scrapped. CNW was good at
getting miles out of other people's junk for a while in the 70's/80's.
