I began riding Amtrak in late 1973 and even then there were some coaches in
Empire Service that were still lettered New York Central in Amtrak service.
The afternoon train, No.78 to New York from Buffalo's Central Terminal usually
had one or two as did westbound counterpart, No.71. These coaches generally
stayed on native rails. About a year or so after the merger, PRR SD40s and
SD45s started showing up on the New York Central side, which also saw
everything else from the two railroads involved at the 1968 start.
