The number one reason for switching to separate locomotives for Metroliner
service was two-fold- collision protection at what few grade crossings there
were and the growing unreliability of the MU cars were the principal reasons
for Amtrak to switch to locomotive hauled Metroliners. Since the Amfleet I
cars are based upon the original Metroliner design, these cars seemed a
natural for use in this service and certain groups of Amfleet cars have been
modified for Metroliner service, while the rest of the Amfleet I and II cars
are used in general service around the Amtrak system. I hope this answers that
question on the Metroliners.
