The NH was a pull on the PC but if it had been involved from the start I
wonder if it may have been a plus quicker like the (NEC) has become.
The unique item on notices out here in the mid west is all of the Short
lines picking up abandon components of different tracks. A lot of former
NYC and Penn routes and or connections.

January 1 is the anniversary of the New Haven becoming part of the Penn
Central in 1969. This burden was one of the conditions of the merger
that
was dictated by the government. Taking over the New Haven allowed PC to
lose an extra million dollars a day, and this privilege only cost PC a
sixth of a billion dollars, give or take a few million.

Is buying a slide for 80 bucks any different than buy a
Athearn-Gen F7 and completly taking it apart to change out the grills
and repainting it because the "red P is too red" or the "black is too
black", or this ain't right, or this is too right!???? I would LOVE to
see some of you guys PERFECT layouts. Or doing you have time to build a
perfect layout? Or are you spending time posting..."Hey guys, look at
the new PC diesel I just built! It has real employees in the cab. WOW!"
Why don't you guys who just can't wait to point out everything
wrong with Athearn-Gen, Atlas,Bowser,Overland,EMD, etc,etc, show up to a
PCRRHS convention and bring your models and let some real PC employees
look over your models. Well??????

I also meant to say the way some individuals are, their models are
supposedly more perfect than the big iron.
Model rails aren't the only guilty ones at this. I've seen it across
the aircraft and armor communities too.

Well yes it is different. Not right or wrong but different.
I would LOVE tosee some of you guys PERFECT layouts. Or doing you have
time
to build a
perfect layout?
Actually yesterday I posted a shot of the progress of my layout in my
basement to the Files section. It still does have some work to do
though......!
Or are you spending time posting..."Hey guys, look at

Now that's just silly.

I have brought my models to a PCRRHS convention plus RPM meets for all
to
see. I also think that posting models to the PCModelers group exposes
the
models to a much wider audience than the PCRRHS attendees.
It is one thing to nitpick but another thing to point out some problems
AND
show how to fix them.
While I still think Athearn did a pretty good job with the Penn Central
F-units I am replacing the Genesis shell with a Highliner shell. Why?
Well one
reason is that I already have a couple of Penn Central F-units
(Highliner
shells on recycled Stewart mechanisms) and I guess I was more careful
in the
construction of the Highliner shell than the Chinese assembly line
people were.
I am more pleased with my own constructed models than the RTR version
and
what's wrong with that?
- -Tom Haag.
p.s. - Bob that's a great looking model and hope to see more from you.
I
have always enjoyed you Southern, NW, and NS modeling!!

All,
For the benefit of everyone who is wondering what they missed, it
appears that a discussion that was taking place on the PCModeler list
got cross-posted to this mailing list.
List rules prohibit cross-posting between the Penn Central Mailing List
and other lists. Furthermore, there are many members of this list that
are not on PCModeler, and have no idea of the discussion that took place
before the thread spilled over here.
For these reasons, please continue the rest of this particular thread on
the PCModeler list only. Thank you.

Subject: PC: X29 MOW cars PCRRHS exclusive offer
Hello PC and PRR?fans and modelers,
The PCRRHS is taking orders for an exclusive run of HO scale Red Caboose
X29 MOW boxcars in?camp car?yellow. These will be available in 2 PC
numbers, 2 PRR numbers, and painted but unlettered. The cars will
be?assembled (RTR)?with plate ends and patch panels, and include the
grabs and end markers that were found in cars formerly in express and
mail service. The entire run will be only 300 units with a price?of
$31.95 each. PCRRHS Model Committee members did the research for this
project.
PCRRHS members had advance notice as an order form was included with the
last POST. A link to the?order form?and more information on the cars can
now be found on the PCRRHS homepage, www.PCRRHS.org.?More than half?of
the PC units are now sold, so please indicate if an alternative is
acceptable. Payment on unfilled orders will be promptly returned. Please
print out and use the order form if you can as it makes everything
easier on our end.
We had hoped to have these available for the West Springfield show, but
delivery is now expected either during that week or the first week of
February. Thank you.

NH was short term failure. long term success-
New Haven Merger Opens way to Profitable operations - i.e. North east
Corridor (NEC)
Although the New Haven merger was negotiated as part of the PC merger
and
forced in on January 1st it appears from the bankruptcy, and the NH
additions to
the red ink, that the NH idea was a bad one. In fact history would
demonstrate that it was a good idea.
Since the PC was the largest merger in history (through 1968) no one
imagined how long it would take to align and merge these unprecedented
large
companies. Con Rail which emerged would become one of the most
profitable and
successful merged railroads in history. Further, the NEC remains in a
strong
positive cash flow position and subsidizes Amtrak's otherwise negative
cash
position.

This is only true for operating costs. Like all passenger rail systems,
Amtrak (including the NEC) requires a government subsidy to cover
capital
costs.
