In my earlier post, I stated these were out of service in the photos.  It 
appears that might have been short term storage.  In Railpace's CONRAIL 
VOLUME 1 on page 79 there is a photo of 4973 working at Helmetta NJ in 1976. 
So at least one made it into Conrail for a short while.
