Re: PC: Penn Central Lightning stripe!!!!!!!

Gary,

Even though your negative for NYC 7471 is dated 8/16/67 (and I know the
Garys were very accurate), this is not concrete evidence that this unit
lasted until the PC era painted in lightning stripe. The NYC was
repainting locomotives right up to the beginning of PC, witness 5609 which
came out of the paint shop at the end of January 1968 in full NYC paint.

However, as I mentioned when this discussion first came up a couple of
months again, there were at least seven units which I had confirmed through
photographic evidence that were painted in lightning stripe into PC times.
The units again were T-2B 263, 269, & 271; T-3A 276; GP7 5627, 5633, &
5653; The majority of the slides I have have of these units dated post
2/68 have other Penn Central painted equipment in the background.

And Terry Link mentioned back in May 2001 that he had evidence that NYC
7437 also lasted into the PC era in NYC lightning stripes. So the
speculation is not speculation any longer...there were at least eight units
in lightning stripes during the PC era.

Subject: PC: Penn Central Lightning stripe!!!!!!!

A few months ago, there was a question on whether any ex-NYC locomotives
retained their lightning stripes into the PC era. The general consensus
(to
which I formerly subscribed) was that the lightning stripe scheme, which
NYC
stopped using in 1959, disappeared by 1965. But, as I was going through
some new (to me) negatives tonight, I stumbled across NYC 7471 in lightning
stripe. The negative is dated 8/16/67, only six months before merger!

So, you say ... maybe the date is wrong? No, the date is correct!!! The
photo was taken by "The Garys" who were careful to date stamp their
negatives. Also, 7471 is a PC number applied during the pre-merger 1966
renumbering. The locomotive was previously NYC 6071.

While I have yet to find a lightning striped locomotive photo dated after
Feb 1, 1968, this is pretty good evidence that at least one locomotive made
it all the way to the PC era!
