Here in SE Michigan there are a number of old right-of-ways that were 
abandoned in the NYC era in the late 50's to early 60's.  These are most of 
the old LSMS lines. A few spots did make it into PC & CR.

Some of the right-of-ways that are adjacent to farm lands have long since 
been plowed under, while others are still clearly visible.  I am not exactly 
sure who owns them, but I think it may be the state or county.  There has 
been a big debate recently over converting some of these in Washtenaw County 
to Rails-to-Trails, connecting Ann Arbor, Tecumseh & Manchester.  The folks 
living along these lines are all pretty much against it.
