Jerry,

Bi-directional from a single cab/control stand as on E33/44. An E40 would
require engineer to walk to the other cab and set up brake handle, reverser,
etc.

I do not recall any always catching fire. On NH or PC? Catenary or Third
Rail?

More which caused their demise is when Amtrak eliminated Grand Central to
Boston service in 1971. This made GCT am Amtrak only stop for Hudson Line
trains and ALL New Haven Line commuter trains.
