An Usher would have worked in a major station, directing
people to the proper track, etc. A similar job exists today. At NY Penn Station,
there are people who wait at the top of the stairs down to the tracks, and
control the flow of passengers down to the train. (I've seen them in
Philadelphia, too.)
I'm not positive, but I think the NYC equivalent was
'Gateman'.
