Few societies have the funds for serious restoration projects, and when
they do it's easy to get in to squabbles over why did A get money and B
did not.

On the other hand, societies can make small donations to help direct
projects. In the case of the L&N U25B, the L&N Society made a donation
towards painting the unit in proper colors.

Also, societies can spread the word to their members, telling them where
donations of time and money are needed. A few serious volunteers drawn
into a project will do much more than the donation of a few hundred
bucks.
