PC: Beacon Park

My earliest railfan adventures were mostly with engines based at Beacon
Park. Sometimes I would go to Rt. 128 station but more often to South
Station, about the time of its' greatest danger of demolition. Long
lines of Penn Central GP-9s and E-8s would be idling all day way over at
the Post Office side of the yard throat. After a few years this
arrangement was changed to have the locomotives on the parking lot side
of the throat, where the Railway Express building used to be.
The sight of pairs of E-8s coming over the Fort Point Channel
drawbridges then threading through the maze of double slip switches on a
foggy day and the sound of their horns echoing off of the old brick
warehouses are always exciting to recall.
