Just read a history of the Stewartstown RR, a
small independent in York Co that connected to the Northern Central at New
Freedom. It seems that after hurricane Agnes (June 22, 1972) the NC was
severed in numerous locations north and south of New Freedom, cutting the
Stewartstown off from the world, and stranding a number of freight
cars.
The book describes the cars being dismantled and
trucked out to York, where they were put back together and sent on their
way. There are no photos of this interesting procedure in the book.
I wondered if anyone had some pictures to post?
The book was published by Baltimore Chapter NRHS, and is
excellent. It brings the reader up to date to about 1996. Does
anyone know the status of the Stewartstown today?
