Jim,

The information you are looking for is found in a pamphlet titled "New York
Central Caboose and Work Equipment Directory" printed by the Chief
Mechanical Engineer in 4/68 (I have only a partial Xerox copy).  According
to that document, there were extensive renumberings of cabooses.

The NYC's 33' bay window cabooses, numbers 20200-20497, were all renumbered
into the 21500 - 21798 series.

When looking at photos, remember that NYC cabooses with numbers in the 20xxx
series have their original numbers.  NYC cabooses with numbers in the 21xxx
series have been renumbered.  I do not know exactly when the renumbering
occurred, but it appears to have been done in anticipation of merger.  These
are the PC's class N-7 cabooses.
