If I am not mistaken, the passenger pilot made by P2K is correct in the real
world, not the model world as the hole for the clam doors was smaller.  The
ex-PRR units lost the clam doors over time (original use of the doors was to
protect the crew in train-car collisions).  I think the large hole is to
clear a working coupler on 18" radius turns.
