They were used to tag most everything (hoists, electric motors, saws,
drills, etc.) on the PRR and PC and Conrail.  I have quite a few and
most of the ones I have are brass.  A couple of the ones I have for PC
are cast aluminum and all of the Conrails were cast aluminum.  Conrail
quit using them in the 80's and went to a different tag to keep track of
this type of equipment.  I have never seen or heard of these small tags
on freight cars or engines.
