I just did some NYC models myself to get a better mix of predecessor
power.
There are excellent all color photos in "New York Central System, Gone But
Not Forgotten", by H.F. Cavanaugh. All handrails shown in pre-merger paint
schemes including GP-40's are yellow. Edges of steps are both yellow or
left black from what I can tell, some steps are too dirty to tell.
