SP had a big explosion with an ammo train. Recently UP uncovered some
unexploded bombs from this while doing some yard work. Apparently SP
rushed to get the yard back into service and accidently buried some
unexploded bombs. When the backhoe operator uncovered the first bomb
recently, he first thought it was an old water heater.
I would assume that the miltary still used the rails then for moving
people, since we still had an extensive passenger system and air was
expensive.
Rail is the way to move a lot of equipment, especially armor. Fort Knox
still has an extensive area for loading tanks on flats.
