In the late spring of 1969 a special train operated coast to coast and back
in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the completion of the
transcontinental railroad. The train's locomotives and cars were painted in
a commemorative blue and gold scheme, and lettered "American Railroads." I
watched the train, pulled by Nickel Plate Berkshire #759, as it went through
Rochester, New York and took on water next to NYC/PC's Despatch Shops in
East Rochester -- water provided and pumped by the East Rochester Volunteer
Fire Department. The end of the train was brought up by a former PRR
square-end observation car from the Broadway Limited.
You can see a shot of the train in Green Frog's Penn Central tape set.
