As far as I know Metra retired them when they were due for major overhauls
so all are well-worn with thousands (Millions?) of miles of commuter runs
under the belt.  NYS&W has a couple and managed to blow up both in some
form or other hauling freight with them at low speeds -

Heck the two we have here painted as Lackawanna units are former PRR/PC
units, one by way of NJT and one by way of the MBTA.   I'd think if for
those they had big bucks to drop on repainting them, they had some to drop
on the mechanical end of it..  although I have heard of sillier things...
an ad I saw in the paper once:

1980 Olds Cutlass.  does not run.  over $1500 into stereo system.  $1700
OBO - 

If someone had spent $1500 on mechanical stuff instead.... they would not
be trying to get rid of a car!
