Greetings to all,
I have written to David Bird at the National New York Central Railroad Museum
about that Museum preserving a couple of former New York Central/Penn Central
"1100 series" MU cars.
Since he mentioned that the Museum can't afford to buy a couple of these cars
from the NY MTA Metro-North Railroad, I have decided to try to get the MTA
(Metropolitan Transportation Authority) to possibly donate 2 of these MU's to
the National New York Central Railroad Museum upon the time they are retired,
or at least the time when the first to be retired, are retired.
As I have stated previously, 53 of these classic MU cars were built for the
New York Central System in 1962, and another 34 in 1965. They were all built
by Pullman-Standard, and were in the NYC's 4600/4700 series. 27 of the 53
built in 1962 were owned by the Port of New York Authority and leased to the
NYC. The other 26 were owned directly by the NYC. The 34 cars of the 1965
order were all owned by the Port of NY Authority, and leased to the NYC. The
26 owned by the NYC were placed in the 4600 series while the others owned by
the Port of NY Authority were put in the 4700 series. All of these MU's were
put in the 1100 series by Penn Central, and have been in that series ever
since.
I have realized that one letter from me only to the MTA, will probably not
make the MTA Metro-North Railroad realize how important it is to donate at
least 2 of these MUs to the National New York Central Railroad Museum in
Elkhart, Indiana, upon the time which they become surplus. However, I have
realized that if a large number of people write letters to the MTA Metro-North
Railroad, asking them to please donate at least 2 1100s to the National NYC
Railroad Museum because of their historic value, and the fact that they are so
well liked by railfans, then maybe they will realize how important it is that
two of these cars be donated to the National New York Central Railroad Museum.
I am asking for the support to do this from as many railfans out there as
possible. All it takes is a letter to the MTA Metro-North Railroad explaining
how the important it is that they donate at least 2 1100s to the National NYC
RR Museum.
For all of you that wish to support this, I'll let everyone know where to
write the letters to at the MTA Metro-North Railroad pretty soon, as quick as
I can find out the best, most active dept. or person at the Metro-North
Railroad to mail the letters to, that will make the MNRR realize how important
it is that they donate at least two of these MU's to the National New York
Central Railroad Museum. I'm not asking anyone to donate any money to anyone,
or anything like that, I'm just asking that as many railfans as possible join
in this effort to save a couple of 1100s at a Museum that we can be assured
will preserve these cars in the best way - the National New York Central
Railroad Museum.
I thank all of you who plan to join this effort ahead of time, and please
don't write to anyone though until I find the best dept. or person at the
Metro-North Railroad to write to!
John W.
