Re: PC: Handling Freight in Britain

Mike:
The book on saving British Rail that I mentioned is Britain's Railway: The Only Transport for the Future by Colin Garratt. (London: Sunburst Books, 1993). The book was produced by Milepost 92 1/2, a business dedicated to preservation, publishing, images, and just generally assisting the railways. Their address is Milepost 92 1/2, Newton Harcourt, Leicestershire, LE8 OFH. (E-mail: michael -AT- milepost.demon.co.uk) The book was based on a multimedia show they put together in support of British Rail. There is some discussion of freight. It would be interesting to know what they think now -- since privatisation has happened.

Magazines: The Railway Magazine (IPC Publications)-- a good Trains sort of magazine; Modern Railways (Ian Allen Publishing) -- more like Railway Age, although more mainstream instead of just professional; finally, Traction: "Devoted to Classic Diesels & Electrics Past and Present"

These were the most interesting mags I picked up while in the UK. A shop handling international magazines may have some of them. If not, you may be able to find them on the web -- I'm not sure.

There were some good books on privatisation on the shelves while I was there. Unfortunately, I don't remember specific titles. As I was on vacation/holiday, I wasn't looking too carefully at the modern stuff -- I wish now I had. You might also check British newspapers if you can find indexes/holdings in a well-equipped library. There were some columns circulating on the aftermath of privatisation while I was there. This might be interesting reading.

I hope this is some help to you. I wish I could provide more information. If you have any other questions, or would just like to correspond about railways in Britain, feel free to E-mail me.
