If looking to stay in the Altoona area, I would suggest the Station Inn in
Cresson.  The west slope mainline runs directly across the street from the
Inn.  Nothing like watching trains from the front porch all day and night.
Almost all rooms have a good view of the tracks and the prices are
inexpensive.
The car shops in Holidaysburg had a large collection of old NYC and PRR
rolling stock.  Not sure if it is still there now, but worth the look see.

Consider Altoona.  PS the Railroaders Memorial Museum's Master Mechanic
building is now open.
