OK gang, it looks like we have some support for this idea of a
historical society (real or virtual). I haven't been tabulating a
list of the "me too" [*cringe*] e-mails, but I'm sure Jim has
developed a list of who's in.
So now where do we go from here? We have a number of people on this
list who are showing interest. However, a dozen or so people from
150 PC fans in cyberspace isn't a real good indication of interest.
I think that to create a society like this, we're going to need to
take this idea to the masses and get some real input. That's where
I think the proposed meeting at the CRTS convention in Cleveland
would help, as we can get a better idea of the interest level, and
see how many people would be willing to help. Who knows--maybe this
is an idea before its time, but you'll never know if you don't give
it a try.
I will say this much: I am more than happy to offer my Penn Central
Railroad web site for use by any such society. However, I will say
now that I can't do much beyond that; because of other pressing issues
in life, I don't have much time to devote to such an endeavor. I have
a hard enough time updating the web site as it is (maybe I'll have
time this weekend, BTW). I can do what I can, but it may not be much.
Also, I don't want the mailing list to turn into a discussion of
creating a society and drowing out any other great PC dialogue that's
been going on over the past several weeks. If it will help, I propose
creating a separate mailing list for those who want to discuss the
formation of a historical society, which anyone who has a serious
interest in discussing the matter can join and participate in. I'm
not trying to stop the momentum of this movement, but I don't want
to drown out our discussions FL9s and where that NRLX 47356 covered
hopper is (anyone seen it lately?). If there is sufficient interest,
I'll create it this weekend. If you would me to start a historical
society planning list, please e-mail me off-list (that is, to
jer -AT- smellycat.com -- change you "To:" header), and if there is
interest, I will set it up.
One last thing folks, slightly off topic: PLEASE edit your outgoing
messages to the list. Edit out anything not pertinent to your replies.
It reduces the load on the list server, and it's easier to read your
message. Thanks.
Later,
-Jer
